An Introduction To WDR In Security Camera

11-05-2016 | Security camera

The images captured at the bright backlight usually have a darker image of the object. In terms of the security camera, the ultimate goal of capturing the image of the culprit is not achieved. In order to get the desired images, the security camera is loaded with the feature of Wide Dynamic Range.

What is WDR

The Wide Dynamic Range function ( WDR function) is needed to get the clear images in bright backlight situations where the intensity of light is high and both dark and light fields come in the range of the frame. The WDR captures the image with both light and dark areas in the same frame and works to give the normal tone of the image where the light is not high and dark is not too dark.

Where to use the WDR feature of the security camera:

These are most preferred where the light in the premises or the frame is coming from various angles.

Lobbies: Where the light flows in from various windows and artificial light sources.

Entry gates: Where the light is coming from side windows and gate and artificial sources.

Indoor recording: When the light from the sides or doors may make the person unidentifiable.

Night time recording: Where the light sources are not consistent leaving some areas in the dark.

How it works

Usually, security camera is not capable of producing correct images at times of underexposed and overexposed light sources. They can record only the middle of the image with either too bright or too dark images. With WDR technology, the cameras are loaded with advanced sensors that provide wide range of lighting to capture high-quality image.
The WDR capable cameras balance the images in two ways. Firstly the tone mapping system allows to automatically brighten dark areas and darken light areas.
Alternatively, the camera captures multiple shots of the scene at different light levels. This creates overexposed and underexposed similar images, that it combines. Then it takes the most balanced type of the image for recording purpose.
WDR feature has been improved in latest security cameras that make the best choice for recording clear images at any location and at any given time.
