What is the role of lens in a cctv camera ?

A CCTV Camera serves the most important role in identifying the culprit after the crime. With a number of CCTV Camera variations available in the market, it can be difficult to put a finger on the correct IP CCTV Camera. The CCTV camera specifications need not be maximum and the most recent but rather in accordance to your specific security needs. The best way to make sure that you choose the correct security camera is by keeping in mind the images/ video surveillance recorded by the CCTV camera, and if they serve the need of the security system.

The most important factor while considering CCTV camera specifications in the lens. Right lens resolution can be the biggest difference in good quality surveillance and huge blind spots.

Role of the Lens:

It is often said that a “security camera is as good as its lens”. The lens of a security camera determines how much area is covered by the camera. Choosing the correct lens for the CCTV camera is as important as choosing the correct security camera for a specific spot/need.

Focal Length of the Lens:

When it comes to how far a security camera can see, it depends upon focal length of the camera. There are two kinds of focal lengths to choose from: Fixed and Variable. Just as the name suggests fixed focal length cannot be changed and hence the position and distance of the CCTV Camera from target is very critical. The variable focal length on the other hand, can be adjusted normally.

CCTV Lens View:

The CCTV Lens View determines how wide of an area is captured by the CCTV Camera. With bigger focal length, the field of view becomes narrower and vice-versa. It is difficult to make out details in a wide field of view. For example: A wide field of view of about 75 to 180 degrees can be covered with a 2.5- 4mm focal length.

Matching the lens and Camera:

In order to fully use the camera’s capabilities, it is very important to match the lens resolution to the sensor and image processing. If the lens fitted inside the camera is made for a smaller image sensor, the image will have black corners. Similarly with a lens for a larger image sensor than the one used in the camera, the field will be smaller than what the lens can cover.

Hence, we can say that a lens plays a very vital role in determining the quality of your CCTV security camera design. Just like best laid plans can fail due to a small detail, similarly a poor lens in the weakest link that can undermine the whole security system.
