IP OVER COAX

22-08-2016 | IP Camera, Coax, IP Over Coax

Why is the combination of ip cameras over coax cables gaining popularity

IP based surveillance is gaining more acceptance day by day as it offers expandability and the higher resolution recording capability. But the cost of the IP cameras and the recording NVR server is still high, to reduce this cost a combination of IP Cameras and Coax cabling is used.

While upgrading from a traditional CCTV system, the part of your old system that you can re-use is the coax cable. This requires the use of a device to transmit TCP-IP over what is essentially a two conductor wire (coax) instead of Ethernet cable which has 8 conductors. This not only saves the cost of the cable but also the labour cost involved in installing the cable. Any facility with longer cable runs such as warehouses, industrial or commercial facilities, or even a typical supermarket or any other venues where it is very difficult or complicated to install the wires, are the best venues for such a system. Full conduits, elevator shafts, and multi-floor penetrations are a few examples of conditions where even for short distances, it may make sense to use IP cameras with coax cable.

Advantages of using IP over Coax

  • Its Cost-effective. Utilizing the existing coaxial cable reduces the amount of labor needed to install the new IP CCTV video system and hence it becomes more cost effective to use IP over coax.
  • If the coax cables are pre-installed, it reduces the time of the project by a great deal.
  • Using Ethernet over Coax extenders allows you to run 100Mbps up to (500 meters) 1,640ft. And thus the cable distance can be extended.
  • Less Network Hardware is required with IP over coax. In this system IDF closets are not  needed every 100 meters unlike in the case of traditional networking. It also eliminates the need for PoE inserters.
  • Ip over coax is Simply plug and play, no set-up or configuration is required. This makes it Transparent to the network and easier to install.
  • Due to easier installation, Ip over coax can be used for both indoor or outdoor cameras.
  • A system with IP over Coax can transmits up to 100mbps up to 1,640 feet.
