4 Technologies for low light security camera

Security Cameras to be installed in areas with limited or low lighting need special thought. This is so because the security cameras need light to produce a quality image and hence it is very important to understand your lighting conditions prior to the IP cameras selection. When most criminal acts are carried out on secluded and dark spots obscured from the normal view,  security cameras capturing quality images or video even in low light become a vital part of any security system design.

Today there is a wide variety of technologies ensuring that the IP Cameras capture usable video in any lighting conditions:

Day and Night Camera

A day and night camera is a security camera equipped to capture images during the day when there is abundant light as well in the night when there is little or no light. These security cameras utilise various technologies to improve the image quality in poor lightning conditions. IP cameras equipped with the day/night functionality use the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to create a black and white image. Day and night IP cameras needs an infrared cut filter which blocks infrared light to produce color images during daytime and whenever an IR image is needed, the filter can be removed.

IR Illumination

Infrared Illumination is a popular method for night vision. For IR Illumination, a device which is sensitive to invisible near infrared radiation is used along with  an infrared illuminator. While selecting an IR Illuminator, its is vital that the illumination angle matches the camera’s field of view. IR illuminators are useful in excluding shadows and revealing identifiable lettering, numbers, objects etc., perform high speed video capture and can aid in facial recognition.

Digital Slow Shutter

Digital Slow Shutter  or commonly known as DSS technology informs the video sensor to acquire more light so that the electronic shutter in the security cameras slows down to a speed below the normal and to allow additional light to be captured by the sensor. This is vital to obtain a brighter image with minimal motion blurring. Most security cameras equipped with the DSS feature allows the user to program this through an on-screen display.

Image Intensifiers

Image intensifiers amplifies the light available for a better night vision. The image intensifier technology involves electrons hitting a phosphor screen and the energy of the electrons makes the phosphor glow.

Since human eye can differentiate more shades of green than any other colour, a green phosphor is used, which allows for greater differentiation of objects in the picture. Over the past few decades the image intensifier technology has seen great improvements and have been quantified in distinct generations of image intensifiers.
